How to Listen to Your Body

Learning the Language of the Body

By Natasha Rondy·rondy life

For much of my life, I believed that life and success were things to be achieved through thinking.

Through learning.

Through reading.

Through analysing.

Through asking questions and finding the right answers.

And whilst these gifts have served me well, I slowly began to realise that much of what I was searching for wasn't found in my thoughts.

It was already being communicated through my body.

Through fatigue.

Through tension.

Through joy.

Through tears.

Through resistance.

Through excitement.

Through creativity.

Through a quiet knowing I had, over time, learnt to ignore.

Looking back, I don't think my body ever stopped speaking.

I think I simply became very good at listening elsewhere.

And perhaps this is one of the greatest invitations of healing.

Not learning more.

Not doing more.

Not becoming someone new.

But learning how to listen.

Listening to myself.

Listening to my thoughts.

Feeling my feelings.

Learning to notice.

Becoming curious about what the wisdom of my body was trying to share.

Not critical.

Not judgemental.

Simply beginning with awareness.

Getting to know ourselves.

Knowing when we feel aligned.

When our nervous system feels calm.

And learning to recognise when we feel out of alignment.

When our nervous system becomes activated.

Nature rarely rushes to bloom.

Trees do not force new growth in winter.

Birds become quiet when danger is near and sing when safety returns.

Perhaps listening is not weakness.

Perhaps listening is wisdom.

Perhaps the journey home begins when we move from living primarily through the mind and begin cultivating a relationship with the wisdom of the body.
